Washing your hair after a hair transplant: guide and timeline
When and how to wash your hair properly after a hair transplant, how to loosen scabs, and what to avoid in the first few weeks.
After a hair transplant, you wash your hair especially carefully in the first few days: without rubbing, with lukewarm water and gentle dabbing. After about ten to fourteen days, the scabs have usually come away and you can gradually return to your normal hair wash. Your clinic's aftercare plan always takes priority.
The typical schedule
This is what the process looks like at many clinics, or something similar.
| Period | What often happens |
|---|---|
| Day 1–2 | Don't wash, keep your head still. The clinic often does the first wash. |
| From day 2–3 | Daily, very gentle washing following the clinic's instructions, usually with a lotion or foam to soak the scalp |
| Day 7–10 | The scabs soften and gradually come away |
| From day 10–14 | Scabs usually gone, gradual return to your normal hair wash |
The first washes step by step
- Soak: Gently apply the lotion or foam to the donor area and the treated areas as instructed and leave it on.
- Dab, don't rub: Spread a mild shampoo with your fingertips, using only a dabbing motion.
- Rinse with lukewarm water: with low water pressure, ideally using a cup or a soft shower head.
- Let it dry: Only dab carefully with the towel, and not at all on the treated areas. No hot hairdryer.
Loosening scabs gently
The small scabs are part of healing. Don't scratch them off or pull at them. With each gentle soak, they loosen a little more, all by themselves.
What to avoid in the first few weeks
- Rubbing, scrubbing and scratching
- Hot water, a strong water jet and hot blow-drying
- Sport, sauna and swimming until your clinic gives the go-ahead
- Direct sun on the scalp
- Styling products until the scalp has healed
Which products are suitable
In the first few weeks, mild, low-fragrance products without harsh surfactants are the better choice. Many clinics recommend a lotion or foam for soaking and a gentle shampoo. Care ingredients such as panthenol or aloe vera are often used.
That's exactly what our PostOp Set is made for: a cleansing gel for soaking and a mild care foam, both in pump dispensers. You'll find more care under Care after a hair transplant.
Frequently asked questions
Can I blow-dry after a hair transplant?
Better not on a hot setting in the first few weeks. Let your hair air-dry or, at most, use the cold setting at a distance if your clinic allows it.
What if hair falls out while washing?
A few weeks after the procedure, many of the transplanted hairs fall out. This is a normal part of healing; the hair roots usually remain intact.
When can I use normal shampoo again?
Usually after about two weeks, once the scabs are gone. Then you can go back to a mild everyday shampoo, for example our Every Day Shampoo pH 5.5.
When can I do sport again?
Your clinic decides. It's often recommended to avoid sport that makes you sweat for the first one to two weeks.
