How to use a scalp spray: step by step
On the hair or on the scalp, wet or dry, how much? Here's how to use a scalp spray correctly.
A scalp spray belongs on the scalp, not on the hair. It's best applied to a dry or towel-dried scalp, section by section, briefly massaged in and left on. The most important thing is regularity – exactly as stated on the pack.
Step by step
- Prepare: Your scalp should be dry or towel-dried. Take a quick look at your product's directions for use, as the amount and frequency vary.
- Make a parting: Use a comb to make a parting so you can see your scalp.
- Close to the scalp: Hold the nozzle close to your scalp and spray directly onto the skin, not into your hair.
- Section by section: Make the next parting about one to two centimetres to the side and repeat until all the areas you want are covered.
- Massage in: Spread the spray gently with your fingertips, without rubbing. Do not rinse out. Wash your hands afterwards.
Common mistakes
- On the hair instead of the scalp: The care belongs on your scalp. On the lengths, it doesn't reach where you want it.
- Too much at once: The stated amount is enough. More only leaves your roots damp.
- Irregular use: Scalp care shows its strength when you use it consistently every day.
- Blow-drying or styling straight afterwards: Let the spray absorb first before you blow-dry on a hot setting or use styling products.
When is the best time?
That depends on the product. Many sprays are used once or twice a day, for example morning and evening. More important than the time of day is building it firmly into your routine. If you spray in the evening, let the product dry briefly before going to bed.
Special situations
- After a hair transplant: Only use scalp sprays once your clinic approves it. You'll find suitable care for the first few weeks in our After hair transplant category.
- Sensitive scalp: If it burns or itches after application, stop using the product. If the irritation persists, have it checked by a dermatologist.
