How often should you wash your hair? Find your rhythm

Every day or just twice a week? How often you should wash your hair depends on your scalp. And on your shampoo.

How often you should wash your hair depends mostly on your scalp: wash it when it feels like it needs it. For many people that's every one to two days, and with an oily scalp or lots of sport, daily too. With a mild shampoo, that's no problem.

Is washing your hair every day bad?

No, not with the right shampoo. The myth that "washing too often is bad" just won't go away. But what matters isn't how often you wash, it's what you wash with. A very harsh shampoo can leave your scalp feeling tight. A mild one cleanses thoroughly and stays gentle, even every day.

Can you train your hair to need fewer washes?

Lots of people swear by "training" their hair. But how much oil your scalp produces comes down mainly to your genes and hormones, not your wash rhythm. So listen to your scalp. If it feels greasy after a day, go ahead and wash it, guilt-free.

Your wash ritual in four steps

  1. Lukewarm, not hot: nicer for your scalp, and your lengths will thank you.
  2. Shampoo on your scalp: massage in a small amount with your fingertips. Your lengths get clean on their own as you rinse.
  3. Rinse thoroughly: better half a minute longer. Leftover product makes your scalp restless.
  4. Dry gently: squeeze with your towel instead of rubbing, and keep the hairdryer on medium.

The right shampoo for every day

That's exactly why we made our Every Day Shampoo. It has a pH of 5.5, is fragrance-free and suits all hair types. Panthenol (provitamin B5) makes hair supple and adds shine, glycerin gives moisture. Mild enough for every day.

Does your scalp get greasy really fast or show little flakes? Then our Seboderm Cleaner Shampoo is your cleansing pro. Read more in Oily scalp. And for dry ends after washing: a drop of argan oil.

Between washes

  • Keep your brush clean: once a week, pull out the hair and rinse it with warm water and a little shampoo.
  • Hands off: if you're always touching your hair, you move oil from the roots into your lengths.
  • Fresh kick: a few sprays of Organic Aloe Vera Spray on your scalp feel cool and fresh.

Just had a hair transplant? Then the first few weeks have their own rules. You'll find them in Washing hair after a hair transplant.
